Project Description

Overview

The University of Hartford (UHART) is a private university located in the heart of Connecticut that serves a student population of nearly 6,000. Since the University’s inception in 1957, it has grown to offer a wide variety of programs that include Acoustical Engineering and Audio Engineering programs alongside more conventional offerings. In 2021, University leadership launched a renovation program of the school’s Samuel L. Ward Audio Studios recording studio suite.

Program

The WSDG team collaborated with Boston-based Payette Architects on the project. The team was tasked with acoustic modifications to the Control and Talent rooms of the two recording studio suites. These modifications included improved internal room acoustics, improved HVAC performance, refreshed acoustic treatments, and accommodations for future immersive audio production capabilities.

Design

The WSDG team utilized REDIacoustics’ NIRO to optimize the acoustics of the rooms and recommend new treatments to meet the desired sonic atmosphere. Recording Suite 1’s Control room, “the analog room,” received a new front baffle wall build-out to house a stereo set of Quested VH3208 studio monitors paired with two KRK S12.4 subwoofers. Complimentary acoustic treatments were installed on the remaining walls and ceiling. Recording Suite 2 is equipped with a surround complement of Genelec speakers. Both rooms are capable of multiple room configurations depending on the demands of the curriculum.
