Project Description
Overview
La Roca Power Studios is the private recording studio for a well-known Argentinian musician. Driven to create the ‘the best recording studio in South America’ and inspired by the vintage vibe and legacy of Electric Lady Studios, he contacted legendary producer/engineer Eddie Kramer for recommendations. Kramer introduced him to longtime friends and collaborators John Storyk and WSDG (Walters-Storyk Design Group.)
Program
Initially conceived as a private live rehearsal space, the project expanded dramatically with the involvement of Kramer, Storyk, and WSDG. The design team was tasked with crafting a complete studio package that would encompass its layout, interior design, acoustics, and system integration including full Dolby Atmos production capabilities. The look and feel of the rooms would reflect the surrounding natural area and local rustic architecture as well as be inspired by the ‘relaxed, hangout vibe’ of ELS.
Design
The recording studio is built into an existing building on the property utilizing much of its original brick and wood for an ‘old school’ vibe but with modern workmanship and vibrant embedded LED lighting fixtures. The WSDG design team utilized REDIacoustics’ NIRO software as part of the design process to optimize the acoustics of the spaces and employed special angled diffusers and microperf treatment hidden in the ceiling to ensure an ideal acoustic environment in every room.
The studio layout consists of a control room, a live room, a pair of iso booths, and a selection of smaller specialized rooms including one for the studio’s vintage plate reverb units. The main control room features a customized Rupert Neve Designs 5088 48 Channel Console and ATC Monitors. It is also equipped for Dolby Atmos mixing and production. The studio is also well-stocked with an enviable collection of vintage guitars, amplifiers, keyboards, and other musical equipment.
