Overview
Originally constructed in 2015, the Dutchess County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) of Hyde Park, New York is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing shelter and services for adoptable companion animals. In addition to its shelter accommodations, the building also includes specialized areas for medical treatment, visitation, and educational programs.
Program
Home to dozens of adoptable dogs and cats, the interior of the DC-SPCA building consists of long hallways made up of hard, reflective surfaces which has resulted in a higher-than-desirable amount of reverberation in the facility. The excessive reverb in the hallways had an adverse effect on the animal population, amplifying noise and causing them to feel nervous and act out. WSDG offered its services to design acoustic treatment for these areas to create a more controlled acoustic condition that would make for a calmer environment in the building – ensuring that the animals would feel safe in their temporary housing while awaiting their forever homes.
Design
The WSDG design team measured the reverb time of the DC-SPCA hallways and rooms and recommended the installation of hanging ceiling baffles and vinyl coated wall-treatments from MBI for acoustic dampening.
