Project Description
Project Overview
The Elbphilharmonie, an iconic landmark in Hamburg, Germany, stands as a testament to global concert hall design. This architectural marvel, built upon a historic brick warehouse on the Elbe River, houses three performance spaces and a grand foyer, accommodating up to 3,000 visitors. The Elbphilharmonie was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, with acoustic design by Yasuhisa Toyota of Nagata Acoustics.
Acoustic & Technical Design
WSDG was tasked with planning and implementing an emergency alarm system and making acoustic recommendations for selected corridors and lobby spaces. The three halls and the eight-floor high foyer were created as computer models using EASE software. In the two larger halls, WSDG employed digitally controlled line arrays. The large hall features a lowerable central cluster of six Meyer Sound CAL64 systems, along with two additional CAL32 systems for front-row sound reinforcement. The small hall utilizes two Intellivox DSX280 HD units positioned to the left and right of the podium. Mobile sound systems are available in both halls for special events, such as music performances and rock/pop concerts. To manage reverberation in the large hall, 81 absorber panels were installed.
Result
Through sophisticated EASE software modeling, WSDG delivered a fluidly integrated acoustic experience, harmonizing state-of-the-art technology with the hall’s distinct architectural character. The result is an unparalleled immersive listening environment, further solidifying the Elbphilharmonie’s reputation as a world-class venue.
