Project Description
Overview
Opened in 2015, this 4,300 capacity mosque was built as part of the Marmara University Faculty of Theology in Istanbul, Turkey. The worship center was designed as a modern interpretation of classic Islamic and Turkish architectural traditions. This project was a collaboration with architect Muharrem Hilmi Senalp and Hassa Architecture.
Program
The WSDG Design team was tasked with room acoustics and electroacoustic planning of the mosque.
Design
The mosque building consists of multiple halls including the main hall under the architecturally spectacular dome (volume 15600 m³), as well as a second, equally large hall with a lower ceiling height below (volume 7100 m³).
For both halls, room acoustics measures were developed in order to ensure a suitable hearing and to prevent adverse reflections. High speech intelligibility was also a priority when designing the sound reinforcement systems, which utilize DSP-controlled line arrays.
