Project Description

Overview

To keep pace with a growing demand for professional audio production education, the Montgomery County Community College, engaged WSDG to create a state-of-the-art teaching/studio/mixing suite for the college’s expanding Digital Music Technology course, a program designed to provide comprehensive training in sound recording, music production and music technology expertise.  WSDG partner/ director of production, Romina Larregina worked closely with MCCC Coordinator of Sound Recording and Music Technology (SRT), Michael Kelly and SRT Director David Ivory, to determine the architectural, acoustical and media systems design requirements for the new facility.

Program

The MCCC ‘Dream Room’ facility is focused around a new control room capable of accommodating 12 students and with the potential for additional seating.  The CR’s mandate is to provide students with hands-on experience across the entire recording / mixing process in a classroom lab designed to function exactly like a professional recording studio.

Design

Working with Philadelphia-based PZS Architects WSDG developed a comprehensive production/teaching environment within the 1,000 sq. ft. space. The precisely configured 450 sq. ft. fully isolated CR / Mixing Room is supported by a 100 sq. ft. Iso Booth, a 70 sq. ft. sound lock, a 110 sq. ft. green room and a 150 sq. ft. storage/equipment closet.  Outfitted with an SSL XL 9056K console, custom Augspurger speakers, a Genelec 5.1 Surround system, a host of top gear, and a producers desk positioned behind the mixing position, the new CR / classroom provides students with a first rank education in the art of producing, recording and mixing.  Commenting on the completed CR, MCCC President, Dr. Kevin Pollock remarked, “Our new WSDG studio will provide students with the opportunity to work hands-on with cutting-edge technology. This experience will equip them with a high-grade proficiency when they transfer or enter the industry. Our new Center for Music Technology will enable students to achieve their dreams.”
