Project Description

Overview

Established in 1885, Arizona State University (ASU) is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S, organized into 17 colleges featuring more than 170 cross-discipline centers and institutes and nearly 140,000 students attending classes across its 4 metro campuses and online.  In 2019 ASU decided to dramatically upgrade their Music Production and Recording Arts program with the addition of a two-story state-of-the-art recording studio complex, and engaged the services of WSDG to design it.

Program

The recording studio is located in ASU’s brand new Herberger Institute of Design & Arts, a sixteen story residential and academic building.  The building was designed by Arizona-based architectural firm Studio Ma and its first three floors are dedicated to the visual arts, design, fashion, and popular music programs.

Design

The Popular Music Program inhabits the 2nd and 3rd floors of this new ground-up building.  The lower level boasts a fully isolated 2,800 SF recording suite with two separate studios.  Each with its own Control Room, Live Room and Iso booths. And a large shared Iso booth.  The 2nd floor includes (2) 500 SF Ensemble Rehearsal Rooms (1) 700 SF Ensemble Rehearsal Room, (1) 1,200 SF Large Flex Classroom, (2) 550 SF Small Flex Classrooms, (2) 260 SF Teaching Studios, an 1,100 SF Digital Audio Studio with attached 160 SF Shared Practice Room, (11) 100 SF Practice Rooms, and (2) 225 SF Practice Rooms.  The upper floor hosts (1) SF Practice Room and (1) 1,200 SF Digital Media Studio.
