Project Description

Overview

Hermes Synchron, one of Germany’s most renowned dubbing studios, is located within the historic Studio Babelsberg. Founded in 1967, the studio has been a pioneer in the German dubbing industry, providing voiceovers for blockbuster films, TV shows, and streaming content. Its state-of-the-art facilities have enabled the synchronisation of some of the most iconic voices in cinema and television, ensuring seamless translations while preserving the integrity of the original performances.

WSDG was commissioned to modernise Hermes Synchron’s facilities to maintain its competitive edge and uphold its reputation for delivering high-quality dubbing services. The refurbishment focused on upgrading three recording studios and three control rooms to meet the highest technical and acoustic standards.

Program

The studio refurbishment was centered around optimizing sound isolation, ergonomics, aesthetics and acoustic precision, crucial for the demanding requirements of dubbing work. Key updates included refurbishment of three recording studios, designed to ensure pristine voice capture while minimizing external noise interference, as well as three control rooms, equipped with Neumann monitors creating a 5.1 surround system tailored for voiceover production. The upgrade required careful planning to maintain Hermes Synchron’s operations during construction, ensuring minimal disruption to their busy schedule of dubbing projects.

Design

WSDG implemented advanced analysis tools to accurately plan and ultimately build much improved acoustics within the recording spaces and the control rooms. Acoustic surface treatments were customized for voice recording, emphasising clarity and accuracy. While all three-room ensembles are very similar in geometrical layout, a slight differentiation in color scheme was realized.

The control rooms were redesigned to now have a symmetrical geometry, which meant relocating the studio windows. The studios now also support 5.1 surround sound, providing an optimal environment for synchronizing voices with visuals. Although – for the first remodeling step – the studio opted for a system more tailored to their specific needs, focusing on front-channel audio for voice recordings. A Dolby Atmos upgrade path has been implemented in the mixing stage to accommodate future client requests.

WSDG worked closely with Hermes Synchron’s team and integrator AVS Systems’ Florian Strucken to align the technical design with the studio’s operational workflow. Every detail was meticulously crafted to support the studio’s dedication to quality and efficiency.

With these upgrades, Hermes Synchron continues to solidify its position as a leader in the dubbing industry. By blending tradition with innovation, the studio remains a trusted partner for international clients, including Sony Pictures, Studio Canal, Universal, and Paramount. The revamped facilities ensure that Hermes Synchron can deliver exceptional results while fostering the next generation of voice talent and production excellence.
