Project Description

Overview

The Melrose Ballroom is one of NYC’s most unusual live music and private event venues. A sprawling 25,000 sq. ft. four-story building just across Manhattan’s Queensboro Bridge, the recently completed structure features a 5,000 sq. ft. Main Ballroom with a 20’ ceiling height, a 2250 sq. ft. Mezzanine overlooking the ballroom, a 1400 sq. ft. Rooftop Lounge and a 1400 sq. ft. Rooftop Deck with spectacular skyline views.

Program

The Melrose Ballroom was created to host a single major social, performance or corporate event, or up to four simultaneous parties and/or performances. Acoustics therefore were a primary concern. WSDG was engaged at the design stage to determine the best possible acoustic isolation solutions and internal room acoustic treatments. A building-wide Systems Integration design was required to permit the four venues to function in unison and independently. The extensive technology program is highlighted by gear from L Acoustics, Genelec, Pioneer, BSS, Digico, Middle Atlantic and a broad range of Custom audio and video panels. An innovative theatrical lighting infrastructure was stipulated to provide guests with the most exciting party experience imaginable.

Design

Working in collaboration with SWA Architecture, and the Archipelagos design studio, WSDG developed a comprehensive program focused on insuring optimal power and clarity for performances, corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, Bar & Bat Mitzvah’s, the full range of contemporary gatherings. Design elements incorporated soundproof doors, room-within-room wall construction and precise dispersion of acoustic absorptive wall and ceiling treatments. WSDG also worked closely with Electronic Theater Controls Inc./ETC to assure guests of the ultimate theatrical lighting experience. The Melrose Ballroom has been recognized as one of NY’s best sounding, best looking and most accommodating party/performance venues. The creative team pulled out the stops to make this venue a totally positive experience for every guest. And the project was accomplished in keeping with a realistic budget.
