NAMM 2024 – Studio Design Principles – Past, Present and Future
hosted by John Storyk, Founding Partner, WSDG
Anaheim Convention Center, Room 202AB
Recording studios have been around for approximately 100 years. During that time, the studio design community has grown from essentially no community to a robust circle of designers and a constantly evolving environment of design principles. Like all technology, most new ideas build on old ones and in many instances literally supplant an earlier “design principle”. However, a few constants will always remain viable. These include studios having the required contemporary and/or vintage technology to inspire and support artists’ creativity, and (possibly most importantly) a need for studios to exercise “transferability”. Transferability (essentially highly- accurate monitoring) has never been more important in this era of simultaneous audio content creation in multiple studios often by multiple producers. And, in increasingly non-traditional studio environments such as homes, radio stations, churches, luxurious ocean-going yachts, touring buses, and even the occasional Airstream trailer.
This Master Class will address specific architectural and acoustic issues concerning transferability, including “musts” and “must nots” in studio control room design. Parallel to this discussion will be a detailed tutorial reviewing today’s new acoustic materialization products and assessing revolutionary state of the art predictive analysis tools.
