Recording Studio Design — Past, Present, and Future

Hosted by WSDG’s John Storyk, Founding Partner, Director of Design and Sergio Molho, Partner, Director of Business Development

Coral Gables, Florida

Recording studios have evolved continuously since the dawn of recorded music — a sea change that the architects, acousticians, and system designers of WSDG have had a critical role in since founding partner John Storyk designed Electric Lady Studios in 1969. As technology has progressed and the needs of artists and producers have become more complex, studio designers have had to continuously explore new techniques while keeping the core critical listening needs of these rooms intact. Join John and Sergio on a guided history of the Recording Studio and the fresh approaches being spearheaded by WSDG to bring these artistic incubators into a new era.

Home 2024 – Room Acoustics and Immersive Audio

Hosted by Dirk Noy, Partner, Director of Applied Science and Engineering, WSDG

Messe Zürich, Zürich-Oerlikon, Switzerland

Monday, April 22 9:15 AM and 1:30 PM
Room Acoustics – Listen to the music, not the room
The purpose of room acoustics is to achieve the most accurate reproduction of the actual music content with the existing equipment. In this presentation, acoustician Dirk Noy explains the key concepts of room acoustics, such as sound reflection, absorption and diffusion. The terms reverberation time and standing waves are also explained. The presentation aims to convey how these principles interact to create an optimal room acoustic environment. In addition to the physical principles, Dirk Noy will also present various case studies and current trends.

Monday, April 22 10:30 AM
Immersive Audio – Total immersion instead of simply listening

3D immersive audio – achieving an all-enveloping spatial sound – is a highly popular subject in room and electroacoustics. In this presentation, acoustician Dirk Noy provides insights into the practical and theoretical background and an overview of technological approaches such as Auro3D and Dolby Atmos. Terms such as Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) and object- based audio are introduced and explained in context. In addition to the basics, Dirk Noy will also present various case studies and current trends.
