"When we think of sound in deign, we think of acoustic engineering and the science of suppression.
When we think of sound in design, we think of acoustic engineering and the science of suppression. With the shapes, surfaces, and materials of spaces, we manipulate sound—to produce its best performance, in a concert hall, for example, or in a recording studio, where we erase it. We rarely celebrate sound in design, but it should be
explored, expanded upon, and invited in as we would a view or a soft light."
"The Westchester County Center—the largest venue for live acts between New York City and Albany—had, decades ago, fallen on rough times...But a new promoter, Westchester Media, plans to change that—and its money woes. Indeed, The Beach Boys, Boston, Aretha Franklin, and Whoopi Goldberg have already signed on. How come? For starters, a new six-figure acoustic system, installed by world-renowned acoustic design firm Walters-Storyk Design Group. “You can hear the difference as soon as you walk in the building,” says Chief Executive of Westchester Media Irwin Kornfeld. Getting big-name sponsors, e.g., Budweiser and Pepe Infiniti, helped, too."

System integrators and architectural designers often have to deal with
challenges of one type of another-a brick wall here, a misplaced AC duct

stream of airplanes flying overhead has to be among the most difficult
to remediate.

Cotton Hill first opened its doors in Albany, New York more than 25 years ago. The facility is something of a beacon of longevity, attributing its success mainly to a flexible studio design, an extremely diverse set of capabilities and a loyal client base. Recently, Cotton Hill announced the arrival of producer Nathaniel Reichman — an audio producer from New York City with extensive audio experience in television, films and classical music. He has taken residency in an upstairs suite, formerly Cotton Hill’s video editing room.

East Hampton, NY (March 1, 2012)—Creating MonkMusic, a 650-square-foot
professional studio in an affluent residential area, was no simple feat
for Walters-Storyk Design Group.
It became clear during 2011 that there was a resurgence in big room
recording studios. Defying expectation, the kind of studio that had most
readily been undermined by the falling cost of equipment and the
project rooms that followed was making a comeback. The trend continues in the early months of 2012, first with Village Studios in China, and now with MonkMusic in New York.

If you were to hear that someone had decided to build, in these straightened times, a large modern professional recording studio, cram it with classic gear and add a gym and a hotel, you’d probably be wondering what they’d been smoking. If you were also told that it would also be able to accommodate over a hundred students on recording courses and was to be built by one of the world’s most respected architectural acoustics firms, you’d probably just shake your head, boot up the laptop, and Autotune the life out of the girl who seems to be the singer on every song that tops the charts these days.

recording sounds of every sort since 1984?

Two years ago, in the middle of one of the worst economic environments in recent history, Louis Benedetti began searching for the ideal location for a new recording studio. His heart was set on New York City, which he knew would provide a vibrant backdrop that would be ideal for his business. “I’ve had studios in different locations such as Miami and New Jersey, but just felt that New York City was the missing link for us,” he recalls.
‘The location we discovered has all the attributes for a successful
studio,’ says producer/engineer Louis Benedetti of his two-year search
for the ideal New York City studio location. That location is a former bank building on one of Soho’s chicest
streets, where his collaboration with an NY contractor has produced
resulted an ingeniously designed studio. It came at a cost – and with
unanticipated isolation issues...
Producer/engineer/DJ Louis Benedetti has opened the brand-new, three-room Thompson Studios in a former bank building in SoHo. This handsome commercial facility – located on Thompson Street, naturally – comprises an SSL

suite. All are tied to a substantial live room and iso booths, with
access to a full kitchen and lounge.

During this century and the one preceding, New York City has been a first hand witness to the ebb and flow of the broader international music scene and since the 1980s, some might say the Big Apple has served as a 'canary in a coalmine' for the broader recording studio industry at large.

GREENWICH VILLAGE: Most people know it as the house that Jimi built: Electric Lady Studios,
that storied rock-and-roll recording haunt on 8th Street. But what most
people do not know is that the studio – made famous by classic 70s
sessions with the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, John
Lennon, AC/DC and Patti Smith – is today in the midst of a new golden
age to the tune of Kanye West, Beastie Boys, Coldplay and John Mayer.
At a time when every sector of the industry has been wracked by the
endless tsunami of new technology, students and educators need to
determine which emerging and which established skills are essential to
insure their survival.
TOP STUDIO DESIGNERS BUCK TRENDS - Tastes and technology evolve, but the principals of acoustics remains the same. Another immutable reality: “Sooner or later, you need some kind of facility to create content,” as 40-plus-year studio designer John Storyk says. And though the music recording industry has never seen stranger times, there seems to be no end of public demand for “content.”
We’re taught from a very young age that hard work pays off, that if we practice, put in the hours and hone a skill, we will find success. Parents tell us this almost before we can talk, then teachers, Little League coaches, instructors of private music lessons. Then later we hear it from college professors, who tell us that with good grades we will get a good job, if we do the work and do it well, we will be rewarded.

Described by the New York Times as ‘a vision out of New York’s glorious musical past’, Jungle City Studios is the latest is a scarce trail of recording facilities that suggest a return to older ways of working – where acoustics, loudspeakers and ambience are back on the agenda. Its doors are open and big-name artists are coming through...
If you’ve ever set foot in an enclosed pool — even if audio setups were the last thing on your mind — you likely noticed that pool houses quickly become echo chambers. Now try to imagine making audio sound good in the same environment.
BUENOS AIRES: Regardless of the on-going movement towards laptop recording, purists with the desire and the means to create full-scale, well-equipped studios continue to pursue their pro studio dreams. A pair of youthful Argentine brothers recently engaged the Walters-Storyk Design Group in Buenos Aires to create a high-end home studio for their Roma & Romma Records label.
With today’s
emphasis on emergent technologies and hands-on participation, outfitting a
college building can place complex demands on its planners. When Cuyahoga
Community College decided that a new Center for Creative Arts would offer a
wide range of student courses, it faced a number of critical planning
decisions.
CHELSEA, MANHATTAN: NYC is quite literally the backdrop to Ann Mincieli’s brand-new Jungle City Studios. One step into the top-of-the-world Studio A, with panoramic views uptown along the High Line and west to the Hudson River, and you’re hitting the Alicia Keys chorus of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind;” it’s a cinematic moment.
BASEL, SWITZERLAND: Commonly known as ’tis to six generations of fans, the Atlantis Basel’s ‘live long and prosper’ policy has kept it one of Switzerland’s largest and most popular music halls for 63 years. The recipe for this longevity: keep pace with changing times and tastes via equal measures of culinary and entertainment treats. Founded as a café in 1947, ‘tis became a unique jazz restaurant in 1957. In 1975 it morphed into a rock club featuring concerts by Black Sabbath and other mega stars. In the late ‘90’s‘tis revitalized for the DJ generation. Today, the Atlantis continues to cook as a club, lounge and restaurant,
Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG) project manager Romina Larregina worked closely with AES member Robert Rumbolz, the Music Department Coordinator and Director of Music Technology at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., and with local architects, to maximize the school’s $700K budget for a teaching/recording studio. Northwest College offers 2-year, A.A.S. degree programs in electronic music technology, radio production and television production.
Jungle City Studios, a new recording studio perched above the High Line in Chelsea, seems to be a vision out of New York’s glorious musical past. Packed with the kind of gear that makes sound engineers salivate, like an extremely rare 1960s recording console by EMI side-by-side with the latest gleaming digital equipment, it is not the kind of place you would expect for an era of pirated music and GarageBand. And that’s before you notice the Louis Vuitton-patterned fabric on the walls.
An enthusiastic AES member, Robert Rumbolz has always made a point of attending Broadcast Facility Design Panels chaired by John Storyk at recent Conventions. In 2009 as he was reviewing plans for a teaching/recording studio for the Music Department of Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., where he serves as Music Dept. Coordinator and Director of Music Technology, Rumbolz visited the Walters-Storyk Design Group AES Booth at the Javits Center. In a meeting with WSDG principal architect/acoustician John Storyk, he sought an opinion on drawings prepared by CTA, a local (Billings, Montana) architectural firm.
The recently completed MTV Networks Latin America studio complex in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the focal point of a major international expansion by Viacom Inc. The 18-month-long project was led by WSDG-LA, founding partner Sergio Molho and company co-principal John Storyk.
Thanks to the television series, The Sing Off, a capella music has enjoyed a new audience of new fans all over the country. However, the genre is anything but new. In the early 1990s, schools and universities all across the nation had glee clubs, and barbershop harmony – a distinctly American musical genre – had begun to set its roots, remaining popular to this day. Freddie Feldman, owner of Skokie, IL-based Vocomotion Studio, has been dedicated to recording a capella for about a dozen years since performing in an a capella group at his alma mater, Northwestern University.

Audio and video facilities come and go. Some noted spaces in the New York area are no longer, but somehow a recording studio at 52 West 8th Street in Manhattan is still alive and kicking after 40 years—the storied Electric Lady Studios built for Jimi Hendrix.
Husson University in Bangor, Maine, has a curriculum that includes
liberal arts, business, health and education, but until recently it did

Preparing next-generation pro-audio practitioners for successful careers has never been more challenging. The introduction of new methods for creating, producing, formatting, distributing and using audio, have challenged established professionals to dramatically retool their business models and work environments. A nation-wide building program has seen schools commit substantial investments in facilities capable of preparing students to thrive in this digital/downloading/wirelessly-streaming environment.

related disciplines. A link which enables them to enhance each other’s
aesthetics and functionality. The audience for this event will be
comprised of students and faculty from The Art Institute of California
- San Francisco’s Audio Production and Interior Design programs.
In 1970, Jimi Hendrix built a recording studio inside a former
nightclub on 8th Street in Greenwich Village. After he died, Led
Zeppelin, Kiss, Patti Smith and many others made landmark albums there.
Today, Electric Lady is the studio of choice for clients like Coldplay,
the Strokes and Interpol.
Just down the street from the hot dogs of Gray’s Papaya, on a row of
down-market Greenwich Village shops selling used CDs and a certain kind
of glass pipe, 52 West Eighth Street is easy to miss. But a small sign
marks hallowed musical ground: Electric Lady Studios.
On
August 26, 1970, Jimi Hendrix and Patti Smith sat on the stairs at a
party for a new recording studio and talked about their being shy and
how music was a universal language. Forty years later, the AES NY
Section celebrated the legacy of Jimi Hendrix with an all-star panel at
Electric Lady Studios, the site of that party.
Operating nonstop in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village for four decades, Electric Lady Recording Studios has been a remarkable landmark of the world audio scene almost since the day it opened on August 26, 1970.
Forty years after his untimely death at age 27, Jimi Hendrix
remains one of music's most revolutionary artists. In a too-brief
career, he redefined the guitar, far surpassing both forbears and
contemporaries in innovation, intensity and outright ferocity.
The audio production industry is constantly evolving with new
technologies being created everyday and more job opportunities becoming
available, many that reach far beyond traditional music recording. The
Art Institutes schools have responded to this demand with the launch of
new Walters-Storyk designed audio studios at some of its schools.

BANGOR, MAINE: Since 1898 when it was founded, the Husson University
curriculum has evolved to encompass Business, Education, Health,
Pharmacy, Science and the Humanities. Throughout its history this
bucolic campus has provided students with virtually every requirement
for a well-rounded educational experience. Every requirement, but one.
Founded in 1898, Husson University has earned a well-deserved reputation for providing undergraduate and graduate students with a rounded education. But, until recently, the campus in Bangor, Maine, lacked one important facility. “There has always been a desire for an on-campus theatre,” says Julie Green, Husson University’s director of public affairs. “But, without a formal theatre department, funding has always been devoted to more pressing needs.”
WHEN she founded the digital ad agency Exopolis nine years ago, Kat
Egan wasn’t worried about finding good talent. Although the Internet
was young, she figured trained technologists would soon be pelting her
with résumés. Nearly a decade later, she’s still waiting.
Allegro Pianos is more than a high-end piano showroom. It’s an acoustic work of art. The 10,000-square-foot Greenwich, Conn., dealership pays homage to beautiful architecture, as well as high-end pianos, and its acoustic design has no rival.
While other engineer/studio owners live by the mantra “diversify or
die,” Freddie Feldman has confined his career to a very specialized
niche: a cappella recording. Feldman has been singing in a cappella
groups since high school. While he was at Northwestern University
pursuing a double-degree in vocal music and computer engineering, he
sang in collegiate a cappella groups including Five O’Clock Shadow and
Purple Haze. When he learned how to use a roommate’s Pro Tools rig, his
artistic and technical interests melded together.

Top NY studio architect John Storyk, Principal/Designer of
Walters-Storyk Design Group recently delivered a well-attended lecture
to students at New York University’s Steinhardt School. During the talk, Storyk traced the history of recording studios, from
the white lab coat days of the 1940’s and 50’s through the introduction
of the first more accessible artist’s studios like Electric Lady
(penned by Storyk for Jimi Hendrix).
Since
1969, the Walters-Storyk Design Group has created more than 3,000
recording studios and professional audio production environments for
clients, ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Alicia Keys. By joining forces
with Maxicon, a 10-year-old Miami-based audio/video design and
installation company, WSDG Miami establishes the ability to provide
world-class architectural/acoustic design and audio/video integration
services to a diverse clientele.
On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix celebrated the official opening
of his Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s West Village. It would be
the last time he ever set foot in his beloved recording sanctuary; he
died three weeks later in London at age 27 after ingesting a powerful
dose of the sedative Vesperax.
Living
up to its “bohemian past” of the Village Gate (its “legendary”
precursor), this subterranean Village music venue prides itself on a
“diverse” list of “creative bookings”, from indie to global acts and
beyond; a “funky” lounge area adjoins the midsize performance space,
where a “perfect sound system” provides a “loud night out”. Visit project page

The Early Years
The Atlantis Basel, or simply the 'tis as it is
popularly known, is without doubt one of the largest and most historic
music halls of Northwestern Switzerland. The restaurant was founded in
1947 by explorer Paul Seiler and his younger brother Kurt as a café.
The Seiler brothers must have been two oddballs, Paul Seiler for
example used to cruise the city accompanied by chimpanzee Jeannette in
the passenger seat.

NEW YORK: Food Network has been creating tastefully prepared, highly
entertaining programming since 1993. Originally owned by Providence
Journal, and then A.H. Belo Corp, the innovative network was acquired
by The E.W. Scripps Company (now Scripps Networks Interactive) in 1997.
After establishing such household icons as Emeril Live, and Iron Chef
America, it has gone on to create such signature programs as Alton
Brown’s Good Eats and Rachael Ray’s Thirty-Minute Meals.
Stations outside of the top 10 markets making the move from stereo to
5.1 surround-sound mixing of content for broadcast are challenged with
trying to produce local content with multichannel audio in inadequate
facilities. While most would like the luxury of a fully equipped audio
post room, the realities of cost and space limitations are holding
things back. Yet, there are cost-effective ways to redesign and
reconstruct existing rooms that won’t necessarily break the bank.
